About the university:

The history of Ataturk University is the realization of one of the important projects of the Republic of Turkey.

The founder of our republic, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, in his inaugural speech at the Turkish Grand National Assembly on November 1, 1937, stated the need to establish a large university in eastern Anatolia and gave instructions to start studies on this issue.

After Atatürk's death, these studies were interrupted for 12 years; On November 1, 1950, it was again put on the agenda by the third President Celal Bayar in his speech at the opening of the Grand National Assembly. Based on this warning, the government of Menderes II included the subject in its program, and the Office of the Universities of the Ministry of National Education sent a letter to university deans on the subject of “establishing a higher educational and cultural center in the eastern provinces” with the number. XIV/5366, dated 116.195, and asked them to establish a Scientific Committee. Accordingly, after discussing the topic at the Interuniversity Council, a scientific committee of 15 people was created, consisting of 5 people elected by the councils of the three universities that existed at that time. This committee held its first meeting in Ankara on 7/27/1951 under the chairmanship of the Minister of National Education, Tawfiq Illiri, and decided to undertake a study tour in the eastern provinces. Then he went on this trip with President Celal Bayar.
