About the university:
Firat University, which has a deep-rooted history, started its educational services in Elazig, which has a rich cultural life. Later, it became an institution of higher education that greatly contributed to the development of higher education in eastern and southeastern Anatolia by opening higher education institutions in Bingol, Muş and Tunceli provinces, and in Kemaliye district of Erzincan, as well as by training university faculty with graduation activities.
Higher education began in Elazig with the opening of the Higher Technical School in 1967. In the same year, the decision of the Senate of Ankara University to establish the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine in Elazig was approved by the Ministry of National Education. The Higher Technical School was transformed into the Elazig State Engineering and Architecture Academy (EDMMA) in 1969, and the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine started education in 1970 at Ankara University.
Institutions of higher education in Elazig were gathered under one roof under the name of "Firat University" on April 11, 1975 and started operating under a structure consisting of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, the Faculty of Science and the Faculties of Arts. On the other hand, EDMMA was transformed into the Faculty of Engineering and became part of the university with the Faculty of Medicine established in 1982.
